Sabah Route (point to point): Kota Kinabalu – Tabin – Kinabatangan – Sepilok - Mt. Kinabalu

Day 1 - Arrival in Kota Kinabalu

Transfer to hotel. Time to recover from your flight.

Day 2 - Garden and Island birds

Morning birding around Kota Kinabalu. Later we take an excursion to Manukan Island to look for the shy Tabon Scrub fowl.

Day 3/4 – Lowland birds

Early morning flight to Lahad Datu (60mins) on the east coast. On arrival we drive to Tabin Wildlife Reserve (90mins). Birding at Tabin Wildlife Reserve. Overnight Tabin.

Day 5 – Lowland birds

After some morning birding at Tabin we depart for Lahad Datu. After a light lunch, we continue our drive to Gomantog Caves (120mins). The cave is home to over 2 million bats and to another 2 million Edible Nest and Mossy Nest Swiftlets. At dusk, we position ourselves outside the caves for one of Borneo’s great avian spectacles. Chances are good, weather permitting for Bat Hawks and Peregrine Falcons going after these bats. Overnight at Sukau River Lodge.

Day 6/7 – Lowland and Wetland birds

Birding by boat along the Kinabatangan River and its tributaries. It is a great place for birding and wildlife spotting by boat and the open deck of our lodge.

Day 8 – Coastal and Lowland birds

We travel by boat from Sukau to Sandakan and along the way we look for Frigatebirds and several species of terns. Drive from jetty to Sepilok Nature Resort, located just 5mins from the world renowned Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary. The center rehabilitates Former captive and displaced orang utans. A dusk walk will reveal other residents of this reserve. Overnight Sepilok Nature Resort.

Day 9/10/11 –Montane birds

Early morning walk to expand our list of sunbirds, flowerpeckers and munias. Later we drive to Kinabalu Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park HQ is located is located 1,500 m asl at the foot of Mount Kinabalu, the highest mountain between the Himalayas and Papua New guinea. We spend the next days birding here and a chance to see the 17 Borneo endemics found here. Overnight Kinabalu Park.

Day 12 – Wetland birds

This afternoon we depart for the coast. Stop at Tuaran to check out the rice paddies and fresh water swamps. The northern winter migration might reveal a few surprises. Later check into your hotel in Kota Kinabalu. Tour ends.
