Kuala Lumpur - Kuala Selangor - Fraser's Hill - Taman Negara

Pre Day 1

Arrangements can be made for airport pick-up upon arrival in Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) accommodation in the heart of Kuala Lumpur before the bird tour starts. These are additional items are at your own cost.

Day 1: Depart from Kuala Lumpur early morning, Taman Rimba Ampang - Kuala Selangor Nature Park

7:00am: Drive to Taman Rimba Ampang (a lowland rainforest, waterfalls area 20 minutes away, spend the better part of the morning for gems such as the Blue-banded Kingfisher, Fiery Minivets and Diard’s Trogon and Greater Racquet-tailed Drongo.

11:00 - 3:00pm: Back to the Hotel for early lunch, refresh and check out. Travel to Kuala Selangor (1.5 hour drive north west, stopping along the way for perched birds), Check-in to resort. (De Palma Inn)

4:00 – 7:00pm: Drive up (5 minutes) the historical hill of Bukit Malawati for close look at primates and resident birds such as the Brahminy Kite, White-bellied Sea-eagle, Black-naped Oriole, Coppersmith and Lineated Barbet. Drive (20 minutes) to the Sekinchan paddy fields for a great view and of course, good open area birds such as the Pied Harrier, Crested Serpent-eagle, Greater spotted Eagle, White-throated Wood-swallow, White-breasted waterhen, Cinnamon bittern, White-throated Kingfisher, Watercock, Purple Swamphen, Baya Weaver etc.

7:30pm: End the day with a sumptuous seafood dinner along the riverbank as the sun sets on the horizon.

Day 2: Kuala Selangor Nature Park

7:30am: Drive (5 minutes) to Kuala Selangor Nature Park , spend the morning on the mangrove and secondary forest trail. The park is known for good views of the 4-5 species of kingfishers along its lake system during this time of the year (Stork-billed, Black-capped, Common and Collared). Other birds to look our for are Flyeaters, Dollarbirds, Greater Goldenback, Common Iora, Ashy tailorbirds, Oriental Reed-warbler, Pied Fantail, Oriental white-eye and scaly breasted munias. Mangrove specialists such as the Mangrove Pitta, Mangrove whistler, Brown capped woodpecker, and Laced woodpecker etc.

12:00pm: Break for Lunch and relaxation in the only swimming pooled hotel of the whole tour.

4:00 – 7:00pm: More birding in the surrounding areas of Kuala Selangor for coastal birds such as the Lesser Adjutant, Milky Storks (captive bred & released).

8:00pm: Dinner & Optional Amazing Synchronous Fireflies boat tour.

10:00pm: Back to the resort Opportunistic night birds around the resort grounds if they are calling. We hope to see Barred Eagle-owl, Buffy Fish-owl and Large-tailed nightjars.

Day 3: Depart Kuala Selangor and Fraser’s Hill

7:30am: Breakfast & Depart from Kuala Selangor to Kuala Kubu Baru/Selangor Dam (2 hour journey), opportunistic birding along the way.

12:00pm: Arrive Fraser’s Hill, an Important Bird Area (IBA), with a great number of lowland and highand birds. It is a former colonial hill-station surrounded by mature lower montane forest. The surrounding forests are predominantly of oak and laurel trees with the highest elevation at just over 1,000m above sea level.

Check in Shahzan Inn, Hotel, Lunch and rest up.. exciting birds ahead.

Gems in the form of the (only) endemic bird, the Malayan Whistling-thrush, the colorful ensemble of Red-headed Trogon, Green Magpie, Chestnut-crowned Laughingthrush, Chestnut-headed Laughingthrush, Silver-eared Mesia, Golden Babbler, Slaty-backed forktail, Black-crowned Barbet, Blue Nuthatch, Mountain Leaf-warbler and Orange-bellied Leafbirds are almost certain to be ticked.

Other birds to see would be the hornbills (Wreathed and Great) and Bar-backed Hill partridge, Silver-breasted Broadbill, Blyths Hawk-eagle etc.

3:30 - 7pm: Easy birding around the various nature trails and along the roads.

8pm: Dinner and the hunt for owl (Brown wood-owl)

Day 4 to Day 6: Fraser’s Hill Birding

7:15am to 12 noon: More fantastic birding.

12.00pm: Back to hotel for lunch, relax

4:30 - 7:00 pm: More birds Last night Overnight in Shahzan Inn Hotel

Day 7: Fraser’s Hill to Taman Negara

7:00 am: Drive to Taman Negara via Kuala Tembeling (3 hours) Hop on for an exciting boat ride (3 hours) and arrive Taman Negara (National Park). Check in chalets of Mutiara Resort (the best location), subject to availability.

3 days of exciting birding with boat ride in Taman Negara National Park’s pristine Lowland Rainforest. Some of the more than 350 species found here are Wallace’s Hawk-Eagle, Lesser Fish-Eagle, Black-thighed Falconet (one of the world’s smallest), Crested Wood-Partridge, Crested Fireback, Malaysian Peacock Pheasant, Great Argus, 5 species of Pigeons, Blue-rumped Parrot, Blue-crowned Hanging Parrot, 5 species of Malkohas, 2 Treeswifts, 5 Trogons, up to 8 Kingfishers, Red-bearded Bee-eater, 9 species of Hornbills (possible to see at least 3 species), 4 Barbets, 8 species of Woodpeckers(including the world’s largest, the Great Slaty Woodpecker), Green Broadbill, Black and Red Broadbill, Black and Yellow Broadbill, Banded Broadbill, Garnet Pitta, Scarlet Minivet,15 Bulbuls, 3 Leafbirds, Asian Fairy Bluebird, Asian Paradise Flycatcher, up to 20 Babblers, White-rumped Shama, Flowerpeckers, Sunbirds, 6 Spiderhunters and Hill Myna. Owls (hard work to see) here includes Reddish Scops-Owl, Barred Eagle-Owl and Brown Hawk Owl. Gould’s and Javan Frogmouth are also possible to see if they call.

Lunch & dinner at the resort. Overnight in Taman Negara Resort.

Day 8 – Day 9: Taman Negara Birding

7:15 am: Birds … birds .. more birds

8:30 am: Take a Long Boat for birding along Sg Tahan (Tahan River), birding on the boat, walk a short distance to a waterfall.

12:30 pm: Back to resort, lunch & rest up.

3-7 pm: Explore more forest trail in Taman Negara

8.00pm: Dinner & the hunt for owls and nightsjars.

Day 10: Taman Negara – Genting Highlands - Kuala Lumpur

7.15 am: Last look for birds still not on our list check out and drive to the Genting Highlands/Valley for last look s of hill birds, Hornbills. Expecting arrival of Kuala Lumpur at 5-6pm.
